Notes on Carbon Selection Chart
  1. Vigorous backwashing of the bed after installation is recommended. This will remove fines and more importantly, will reclassify the bed according to particle size. If this classification doesn't take place right away, you risk mixing exhausted carbon with the good carbon each time you backwash. Consult Res-Kem for more details on these applications.
  2. The capacity of activated carbon to remove specific sbustances and mixtures depends on the nature of the specific chemical compounds, their concentration, conditions of adsorption (temperature, pressure, contact time, etc.), and how the activated carbon is applied to the problem. In order to provide contact times and usage rates, Res-Kem would need a full water analysis.
  3. What carbon cannot do: water softening, bactericidal treatment, desalinating, heavy metals removal.

Raw Materials Used to Manufacture Activated Carbon

The following raw materials are used in the manufacture of activated carbon:
  1. Bituminous Coal - This coal has both large and small pores and is a good general purpose carbon for this reason. Coal is easy to reactivate and is good for chlorine removal. Coal-based activated carbon may be imported. Imported carbons may be inconsistent in quality - a typical complaint is excessive dust. Res-Kem only supplies the highest grade of imported carbon.
  2. Lignite Coal - Lignite is a soft wood-based carbon and very light in density. It has a low iodine number and a high molasses number. Use lignite coal in applications requiring large pores, for example, in color removal. High attrition when reactivated. Good for chlorine removal.
  3. Coconut - Coconut is the hardest and least dusty of all the base materials. It has the highest iodine number and is good for small or low molecular weights. Because it is imported and quality varies, Res-Kem carefully screens the product berfore stocking and reselling to you. Price may vary due to growing conditions.
